About the position
Two software engineers will participate in several Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) projects where we develop implantable and wearable neural devices in people with severe paralysis, so they can control a computer directly with their brain signals. The engineers will co-develop and create software for independent home use by people using a BCI. The software will need to 1) interface with BCI hardware using implantable and non-implantable BCI technologies; 2) perform real-time signal processing and machine learning on user’s brain signals, and 3) provide an intuitive user interface for computer control with brain signals. The engineers will play a key role in the multidisciplinary team of scientists. More on our work can be found at the BCI-website. Hybrid working arrangement is possible with 2 full days at UMC Utrecht and 3 days at home. Workin hours can be arranged flexibly.

About the department
The Utrecht-BCI lab focuses on new neuroscientific methods for the diagnosis and support of people with neurological disorders. The team is highly multidisciplinary and growing, with currently 8 senior scientists, 6 PhD students, 4 support staff and a varying number of Master students. The members have backgrounds in neuroscience, psychology, biology, physics, computer and data science, and operate as a team with complementary skills and roles.
The common aim the team is committed to, is to translate neuroscientific and technological advances to new solutions for people with severe disabilities. Available techniques include 256-channel EEG systems for intracranial (ECoG, SEEG) recordings, fMRI (1.5, 3 and 7T human Philips systems), 256-channel recordings in patients during awake neurosurgery and neurodevices with 4-128 electrodes implanted in people with Locked-in Syndrome.
About the ideal candidate
An ideal candidate should

Have demonstrable experience in writing medical and research software, including MDR and CE software
- Have completed formal training in Software Engineering or Computer Science

Be proficient in C/C++/C#, Python
- Be proficient with version control (Github)
- Be proficient in applying quality management (eg Jira)
- Be familiar with writing UML
- Be familiar with IoT and interfacing with 3rd party devices
- Be familiar with writing test cases and software tests
- Be familiar with implementing machine learning algorithms
- Be able to translate research ideas to software requirements
- Enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team

About our offer

A salary between €3359,- and €5292,- gross per month (salary scale 10), based on full-time employment (36 hours).
