Past projects

  •  NeuroStars (2016-2019):

Eurostars 2 (Horizon 2020) grant in collaboration with UMC Utrecht on augmented, accurate, full colour and interactive 3D Brain Visualizer that combines multiple neuro-imaging sources to improve brain visualization.

  • iConnect (2014-2018):

ERC advance grant awarded to Nick Ramsey. The iCONNECT project aimed at designing a new generation of implantable BCIs based on high-density ECoG grids. In this project we learned about decoding hand movements and speech from the sensorimotor cortex by combining ECoG and fMRI signals.

 

  • NemoFoil (2016-2017): 

In NeMoFoil the feasibility of wireless grids for human use will be determined. The concept entails embedding of microelectronics for signal amplification, AD conversion and wireless transfer, together with the electrodes in a thin sheet, a ‘foil’.

 

  • BNCI Horizon 2020 (2013-2015)

A consortium of 12 partners from academia, industry and healthcare have composed a Roadmap for development and application of  Brain-Computer Interface technology in the European arena. The roadmap will serve decision making in allocation of research funds of the EU in Horizon 2020. The project is funded by the EU, and is headed by Graz University.   • HCMI project (2010-2015)

Abnormal function of the fronto-striatal network is implicated in multiple psychiatric disorders. New methods to correct abnormal function are needed. As part of a large consortium we investigate whether real-time feedback of one node of the network (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), enables people to regulate function of the whole network. Both Electrocorticography and 7 Tesla fMRI are employed. Funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education and Science, within the HCMI program. 

 

  • Human CNS neuroprosthetics: substituting lost brain function (2007-2013)

A study on feasibility of decoding neural activity in the human brain using electrodes implanted under the skull. Goal was to provide proof of concept of using motor and cognitive brain regions for driving a BCI to generate clicks (brain switch). Funded with a VICI grant awarded by STW to Nick Ramsey. 

 

  • The power of intracranial EEG for BCI (2007-2013)

Part of the large multicenter Dutch consortium to develop new technologies for direct interfacing with the brain(BrainGain). We investigated signals from implanted electrodes in patients and from 7 Telsa fMRI in healthy volunteers, to determine optimal grid characteristics and positioning for BCI. Funded by SmartMix, Ministry of Economic Affairs. 

 

  • Therapeutic opportunities for cannabinoid ligands (2007-2011)

Study on the treatment of smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction, impulse control disorders and cognitive dysfunction. A multicenter project aiming at identifying potential therapeutic applications of endocannabinoid systems. At the UMC the involvement of eCB was assessed for 6 brain functions. Funded by TI-Pharma.

 

  • Neural basis of automatization of cognitive functions (2003-2008)

A study on the effects of training on the dynamics of the neural networks underlying working memory function. Funded with a VIDI grant awarded by ZonMW to Nick Ramsey. 

 

  • Effects of XTC use on the brain (2002-2006)

 A multicenter study into effects of first use of XTC on brain structure, function and neurochemistry. A collaboration with the AMC, and use of MRI, Spectroscopy, SPECT and functional MRI. 

 

  • Protocol development for pre-surgical non-invasive localization of language functions (2001-2005)

A project to develop Tasks for fMRI to provide surgeons and neurologists with location of important functions to be spared in epilepsy surgery (language, motor, memory). Funded by the Dutch National Epilepsy Fund (NEF). 

 

  • Functional MRI markers for anxiety disorders (2000-2002)

Studies into feasibility of using fMRI to indicate levels of generalized anxiety in patients, for use in drug development and efficacy testing.
